What's Happening Around the Country

Greater Washington

In June 2012, Heeding God’s Call of Greater Washington celebrated its first anniversary of public actions at Realco Guns in District Heights MD.  Since June 6, 2011, through heat and cold, sun and rain/snow, and wind and calm, members of HGCGW have gathered each Monday afternoon for an hour at Realco Guns to call the attention of the community to the dangers associated with illegal guns and in particular guns sold at Realco.  The support of the community as registered through horns honked as representatives from HGCGW bear witness for safer streets and communities has steadily increased and recently has begun to average over 300 “honks” per hour.  To date, Mr. Carlos del Real has resisted all efforts of HGCGW to convince him to sign the Code for responsible gun retailers.  Members of HGCGW continue to try to establish positive contact with Mr. del Real.

In June, Reverend James Atwood was interviewed by a reporter from Sojourners magazine for an upcoming article about HGCGW.  In addition, Reverend Atwood’s long-awaited book, America and Its Guns: A Theological Expose, has just recently been released for sale.  Books may be purchased from your favorite bookseller or ordered directly from 541-344-1528 or via email at

Members of HGCGW have developed a brochure which is part of an “introductory” packet that they will use as they visit faith communities in the Greater Washington area as they endeavor to increase their membership and support.  If any other chapters of HGC wish to examine or use the brochure or the packet, they should email Plans are currently underway for the next program of peace scheduled for September 21, 2012, on the United Nations International Day of Peace.  It should also be noted that September 25, 2012, begins the Global Week of Action against Gun Violence adopted by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Residents and neighbors recently rallied in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia to decry recent shootings.  Read about this important act of witness or in Bryan Miller's words, "faith on your feet", in an article that appeared in the Chestnut Hill Local and on Newsworks

Gun Violence in the News

Please read this important editorial written by Rev. James F. McIntire published in the Philadelphia Inquirer.  Also, please read an endorsement from the Inquirer's Editorial Board of Rev. McIntire's suggested policies.

In the July issue of America, the National Catholic Weekly, Fr. James Martin wrote about why gun control is a religious issue.

As reported in the September 4 issue of the Gun Violence Prevention Report, in August in Florida, the
Republicans adopted what the NRA touted as the most pro-Second Amendment position ever included in a major party platform. In Charlotte, the Democrats passed a platform that urges 'an honest and open conversation about firearms.

Citizens of other countries continue to be amazed at the arms Americans can purchase legally. In "Seeing Gun Violence Through International Eyes", Waymon Hudson wrote, "I was struck by the tone of all the international reporting - every news story ended with incredulity that the shooter had gotten his two handguns, shotgun, assault-style rifle, and high-capacity clips legally."
